Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate a PDF?

Drag and drop your PDF into the app, or click "Choose File". Select your target language, then click "Translate PDF". The translated version will appear on the right side.

You can also translate specific pages by enabling "Translate specific pages" and entering the page range.

What's the difference between Apple and Google Translate?

Apple Translate works completely offline on your device. Your documents never leave your Mac. It supports 18 languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and more.

Google Translate requires an internet connection and your own Google API key. It supports 85+ languages including Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian which Apple doesn't support.

How do I download Apple language packs?

Go to System Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages. Click the "+" button and add the language you need, then click Download.

Important: Enable "On-Device Mode" to ensure translations work offline and privately within Comprendo.

How do I get a Google Translate API key?

1. Go to console.cloud.google.com

2. Create a new project or select an existing one

3. Enable the "Cloud Translation API"

4. Go to Credentials → Create Credentials → API Key

5. Copy the key and paste it in Comprendo's Settings (gear icon)

How many free pages do I get?

Comprendo includes 50 free pages to try before purchasing. After that, you can choose from three plans: Monthly ($3.99/mo), Yearly ($19.99/yr), or Lifetime ($29.99 one-time).

How do I restore my purchase on a new Mac?

Open Comprendo and go to the menu bar → Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.

Where is the translated PDF saved?

Translated PDFs are saved to your Downloads folder with the original filename plus the target language code. For example: "document_de.pdf" for a German translation.

You can also open the translated PDF directly in Preview by clicking "Save / Open" in the top right of the translated panel.

The translation quality isn't great. What can I do?

Translation quality depends on the engine used. Google Translate generally produces higher quality results for most language pairs. If you're using Apple Translate, try switching to Google mode.

Also note that highly technical documents, scanned PDFs with poor quality text, or PDFs with complex layouts may not translate as well.
